![]() I’ve always been interested in theological questions of various kinds. The short version is that he got her alone in the house and killed her and cut her up into bits and buried her cut-up body under a cairn in the desert, which wasn’t discovered for a couple years. He got a second wife, a junior wife, but tired of her after a while. I talked to an ex-preacher who had decided that you could have two wives and go to heaven. The excuses people offer are sometimes extraordinary. What surprises you most in these interviews? You can assess later whether it’s accurate or not accurate. Although in my case, I tend to.because I really want to know what the answer is. You don’t ask a question if you don’t know the answer. It’s a little bit like being a lawyer in court, I suppose. It’s very important that the reporting be done first. Knowing that accused murderers so often lie to you, what is your strategy when you walk into the interview? There was also a sheet of glass between us. He put on a show of being angry-“I could throttle you right here”-but it was a display. So there were some questions to ask which he may have felt uncomfortable about. ![]() We were trying to get to the bottom of how much this person had done and whether or not he was responsible for a couple of very specific killings. There have been a couple of incidents, though…I remember where had finally agreed to be interviewed. They’re more inclined to want to talk to you, but they’re just nice as pie, charming, and delightful generally when you talk to them. They’re always the smartest one in the room, even when they aren’t. Frequently the kind of people who do agree to talk to us are people who believe that they are capable of persuading us of their innocence, even though we kind of know they’re guilty, the narcissists in the crowd. People who agree to be interviewed-we’re never forcing them to be interviewed-agree to sit down and talk with us because they want to put on a good impression. Throughout your career you’ve sat down with many suspects-some of whom, I imagine, you privately think are guilty of the crimes for which they’re being accused. It was like being a priest in a confessional booth, where the person is going to tell you the whole thing, beginning to end. He was already doing his time and he wanted to tell somebody the whole story. When he heard that we wanted to talk to him, he’d already been sentenced. What do you think was happening that day of the interview? Was it a matter of trust between you and Ramos? Or was he just ready to purge himself of the story? He didn’t try to push blame onto anybody else. Here was a guy who simply remembered every single solitary detail of this story, chapter and verse, over the whole period of time. And certainly it’s self-serving the way they tell a story, but not in this case. You go in expecting that people are going to lie to you, and they generally do. People lie to you all the time in these interviews. I don’t know whether he was a savant or what he was, but he told the story in such incredible detail and it all held together. This young man, at the time we talked to him, was in his mid 20s or 30-ish. ![]() So you just need to hear the whole story. But our philosophy is if you don’t have it all on tape, you can’t use it later in the edit room. We usually interview people for a couple of hours, and then what you see on Dateline is a few minutes of it. So when Morrison heard that NBC wanted to start making Dateline audio podcasts, the correspondent tells Vanity Fair, “This story was uppermost in my mind.” Morrison still considers his sit-down with Ramos, after he had been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison, to be one of the most gratifying conversations of his career. But Morrison says the episode only aired a handful of times. The grim story was perfect Dateline material-full of twists and turns like a staged kidnapping, an attempted murder, and multiple lovers’ betrayals. Their romance spun out of control, with Ramos and Presba eventually pleading guilty to murdering Presba’s husband, Ed, and staging his death in a fiery 2008 car accident. But there’s one jailhouse interview that still sticks with him-one he conducted back in 2010 with Jaime Ramos, a California man who had an affair with his married counselor, Patty Presba, who was over 25 years Ramos’s senior. Dateline correspondent Keith Morrison has interviewed plenty of suspected murderers in his 27 years with the NBC news magazine. ![]()

Underdogs can become unlikely heroes after a coordinated upset, so as you can imagine, many matches are decided by stray points. If you’re winning you’ll play as Survivors first, but you might get blindsided by a Tank spawn, giving the team up next crucial information about how to get around it and gain on the leaders. The beauty of this points system is that it gives each campaign an exquisite ebb and flow. ![]() This is because as they progress through the map, each player is constantly earning points, and the Survivors will get an extra 25 each for making it inside of the safe room and locking the door. The ultimate goal as an Infected player is to disorient, pin and kill off all of the Survivors so that you can end their run as early as possible. ![]() Each Special Infected has its own skills and quirks, but it’s their ability to combine and conquer that makes Versus Mode so special. That means you can end up playing as the Boomer, Spitter, Hunter, Jockey, Smoker, Charger and yes, even the Tank over the course of a match. Yet instead of the AI Director controlling all of the enemy Intelligence, real players on the Infected team step into the shoes of the Special Infected. The Survivors proceed through the map as normal, fighting off hordes of common zombies and completing objectives to reach the safe room. Frankly, Dupin and his small team, along with Dupin’s partner, were the only characters I found likable. It was too descriptive of the Brittany forest, and way too involved when it came to the stories behind King Arthur. While their lack of assistance and answers drives Dupin mad, he’s determined to discover if it’s a quest for fame or ego or competition that is driving the murderer. The victims are all Arthurian experts attending a conference. And, Dupin’s two inspectors disappear that night. In the span of twenty-four hours, three people are murdered, maybe four. But, before Dupin can even get his team organized, another body is found. On order of the minister of the interior, Dupin is in charge of the case, given the authority of a special investigator. Dupin’s short errand turns the next twenty-four hours upside down when he finds Cadiou dead, shot to death. But, Dupin has one errand on the overnight trip, an interview with a leading Arthurian expert, Fabian Cadiou, as a favor to a Parisian police officer working on a case. Commissaire Georges Dupin and his small team, two inspectors and his indispensable assistant, Nolwenn, were visiting Foret de Broceliande, a forest filled with myths about King Arthur, along with the Valley of No Return. It was only supposed to be an office trip with one interview. The book will appeal to readers who are fascinated by obscure lore about King Arthur, or enjoy minute descriptions of Brittany landscapes. ![]() ![]() Perhaps, however, Inanna longs for a conduit to reach the deep blue below the atmospheric overhead. ![]() The Mask of Warka was possibly a depiction of the ancient Mesopotamian goddess, Inanna, who made her mythological dwelling in Heaven. Instead of Lapis Lazuli or another opaque material, layers of shimmering water are both what is seen and what is performing the act of seeing. In Vala’s piece, the eyes remain negative space. These materials would have been fastened into the pointy, ellipse-shaped space made for each watchful eye-the same shape, serendipitously, as a single indigo seed. Known also as Lady of Uruk, named for the ancient city of Sumer located in present-day Iraq, her eyes were likely made with white shells detailed by blue Lapis Lazuli irises and pupils. They become crisp in view before fading back into the layers of video patterned with glimmering, blue water.Ī pointed ellipse shape flickers above one of the vases – a familiar shape soon repeated in the watchful eyes of the Mask of Warka. Ancient Cypriot vessels rotate and pass through select frames. Objects imbued with mythological meaning and spiritual purpose circulate throughout the video. Time^Object^Conduit is a four-channel video piece that acts as a vessel to hold those three words, like a microcosm of Vala’s practice. It’s drenched in mysteries both ancient and future – where to be a time traveler is normal and to be fixed in any singular era is far less so. In this contradictory space, underworld meets speculative future, solid stoneware meets vibrating neon, and stable blues meet liminal blue portals. Neon blue is in its element when it meets Vala’s science fiction inspirations, beautifully out of its depth when introduced to ancient mythos. And that particular glow, often a blue one, now saturates many object emergences in Vala’s practice. The buzzing colors of neon gas trapped in vacuum tubes cast vivid colors across the 1980s. ![]() ![]() ![]() Having incorrect measurements when cooking can have a number of consequences.įirstly, it can affect how the food looks and tastes – if too much salt or sugar is added for example, the dish may be inedible!
